Celebrating the life of
Douglas Castleman Anthony
November 01, 1922 - February 13, 2024
On the evening of Tuesday, February 13, 2024, Douglas Castleman Anthony passed away peacefully of natural causes in his home at The Social in Savannah. He was 101 years old.
Doug was born in Hague, in Westmoreland County, Virginia on November 1, 1922. He was the fourth child, and the third son, of Mary and Milton Anthony. When quite young, he moved with his mother and three surviving siblings to Washington, DC where she could find a job to support the family. Doug left school early and took a job delivering Western Union telegrams on bicycle. He joined the Navy in 1940 and during the Second World War served in the USS Columbia (CL-56) and later on the island of Funafuti in the South Pacific. At the end of the war Doug married Miss Patsy Heffernan of Savannah, Georgia. The couple had Carole and later a son named Joe. Apparently they thought that was plenty enough.The family spent about ten years in the DC area until the Navy sent them to Jacksonville, Florida. After retiring from the service in 1960, Doug moved the family to Savannah. He delivered the US mail in his second career and enjoyed chatting up his customers and the exercise.
Doug was preceded in death by Patsy, his sweet wife of fifty years, his dear mom and three siblings, Jack, Russell, and Curtis. Doug shared his time in several charitable endeavors and helping to organize retirement groups for Navy units for decades. His quick wit amused folks his entire life, right up until the last days. He was a great human, as a husband and father and friend. Doug is survived by his daughter, Carole of Savannah and son, Joe of San Diego.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Doug's memory to St. Vincent's Academy or Benedictine Military School.
You are a one of a kind, loving, devoted man of service on behalf of this country and your family. Your joyful spirit lives on in all of us. I first met Doug at a Chatham County Veterans Council Meeting. He was wearing a Navy hat which attracted me to him since I'm Retired Navy also. Carole, Doug and I started chatting about his Navy career and I then invited both to a Savannah Navy League Dinner - they attended. He was given a Quilt of Valor by the local representatives of the national organization. I enjoyed talking with Doug on several occasions. The last time I saw Doug was at the Savannah Navy League's Pearl Harbor Day Remembrance Dec 3., 2023 where he was honored along with other WWII Veterans. I will mis seeing Doug.
